One letter, every Sunday. Three things in each issue. One framework for the long grind, one piece of basic science about your body, and one way to think more clearly. Today is Issue #1, going out a few days early because the announcement post brought you here and I'd rather not make you wait.

Let me show you what we're doing here by doing it.

① The framework: discipline isn't a battery

You've probably heard that willpower is finite. The story goes that you wake up with a tank of it, spend it through the day on hard decisions, and eventually run out, which is why you're disciplined at 9am and ordering takeout at 9pm.

The science doesn't actually support this.

The original research it came from was a 1998 study called "ego depletion." When other scientists tried to reproduce the finding, most of them couldn't. The "willpower is a battery" model is, scientifically, on shaky ground.

What's more likely happening when you feel "no willpower" at 8pm: your brain is running an unconscious cost-benefit calculation that says the reward of this task isn't worth the cost right now. That calculation is sensitive to how tired you are, how much you ate, how stressful your day was, and how much the task feels like a chore versus a choice.

So discipline isn't really a resource you spend. It's more like a relationship you have with the task, specifically how expensive your brain thinks it is in this moment.

That shift changes the question you ask yourself. It stops being "do I have enough willpower" and becomes "why does my brain think this is so expensive right now?" Different question, different answers, different fixes.

② The body science: what's actually happening when you "run out"

Your prefrontal cortex is the part of your brain that handles deliberate decision-making, focus, and self-control. It runs on glucose, and it runs on a lot of it. Roughly 20% of your body's energy goes to your brain, even though it's only about 2% of your body weight, and the prefrontal cortex is the most demanding tenant.

Three things tax it:

Sleep debt. When you sleep less than your body needs, your prefrontal cortex's processing speed drops in ways you can measure. After about 17 hours awake, your cognitive performance is comparable to someone with a 0.05% blood alcohol level. You don't feel impaired, but you're making worse decisions and have less control over your impulses.

Glucose drops. If you skip a meal, eat pure carbs that spike and crash you, or run on coffee with no food, your prefrontal cortex is basically running on fumes by 3pm. The "afternoon crash" people blame on motivation is often just hypoglycemia hitting an organ that needs steady fuel.

Decision load. Every conscious decision you make costs prefrontal cortex cycles. What to wear, what to eat, how to respond to that email. By 6pm, after a couple hundred small decisions, you're not "lazy." Your brain is genuinely depleted of the substrate it needs to keep running well.

When people say "I have no willpower at night," they usually mean "I haven't slept enough, I haven't eaten in five hours, and I've made two hundred decisions today." Those are different problems with different fixes, and none of them is "try harder."

③ The way to think: how to spot when popular science has outpaced the evidence

The willpower-as-battery story is a perfect case study in something that happens constantly. A single striking research finding gets popularized into a whole worldview before anyone bothers to check whether the original finding holds up.

Here's the cheap version of how to check anything you read.

First, find the original study. Not the article about it, the actual paper. Just the title and abstract is enough.

Second, search the title plus the word "replication." If the finding has been challenged, replication studies are usually right there in the first page of results.

Third, search the title plus the year plus "meta-analysis." A meta-analysis combines many studies into one bigger estimate, so if one exists it's a better summary than any single paper.

Three searches, five minutes. You'll find out whether the idea you're about to build a habit around is solid or shaky. Most people skip this step because the popular version of an idea sounds confident. But that's exactly when to check.

The willpower model is one example. There are many.
